Can’t speak on current stuff, I went through in 2010. When I was in, we had phone access once in the first three weeks we had 30 seconds to leave a message with a place to send letters, after that we got like one 30 minute call. No fancy tubes on the course and a week in the middle of no where. Slept in the top bunk and showered with 60 people with 10 shower heads. Things have changed dramatically Air Force wide, but it used to be awesome in basic.

In PT uniform, for airforce, women are permitted to wear their hair in a ponytail... but if they switched into ABUs they'd be lit up for not having their hair in a perfect bun--- or at least thats what it used to be. I believe AF36-29-03 recently was updated to allow for high ponytails at least. I don't think low ponytails are permitted but I'd have to double check. Yeah, airforce BMT focuses a lot more on teamwork and focuses on getting trainees to work together. You'll usually see a lot less yelling because the MTIs tend to pit the flight against eachother at various points during the 8 weeks to force growth of the flight as a whole. Also the trainees that graduate get a "graduation weekend" where they are permitted to go to the BX, visit family, and even leave base for one day. If the flight is Top Flight they get the opportunity to leave base everyday of grad weekend. Some airmen get "rewarded" with BX runs by MTIs, but for the most part its the graduates since there's a graduation every Friday. That may be what you are thinking of, though I've been hearing that cellphones have been allowed beyond the initial phone call when you arrive and the second call in 4th week (4th week call is one your MTI can take away at their discretion)

Lackland is the home of Air Force basic training, but it is also home to numerous technical schools where airmen go right after basic. (Security Forces, Services, etc.) So the airman seen at Subway were most certainly not in basic training, but were rather tech school students who had already graduated basic training. When I was there (in the '90s -- yeah, I'm old), we never got to go anywhere in basic -- with the exception of a couple "base liberty" trips which were nothing more than going out to the BX to buy more toothpaste or soap, or whatever. (The only other liberty we got was the evening of graduation where we were allowed to go off base with our family, who'd flown in for the ceremony, for a couple hours.) But once you graduate basic, and if you're starting a career field where your technical training is also based at Lackland, you're given some more leeway. Yet you look the same as a recruit -- with the exception of maybe having slightly longer hair. (Same uniform, same E-1 rank for the most part.) I remember myself and others in my tech school squadron always intentionally avoiding the areas of the base where recruits train for fear of being confused by someone (particularly an NCO) as a recruit and getting screamed at for being somewhere we weren't supposed to be. Even though we weren't in basic anymore, we still feared the TIs (drill instructors) and knew they'd be considered right and we considered wrong (which would get back to our tech school instructors) if a negative encounter were to happen. And since I'm so damned old, I didn't have to worry about cell phones back then. They didn't exist. But all our personal property (basically one carry on bag we arrived with) was taken away and secured in a closet, and only given back to us the night after graduation. I do remember some guys getting their bag back and listening to music on their Walk Mans that night. Our TI (drill instructor) came in and ripped them a little bit -- but not much -- it was the last night we were spending there after all, and I think that's why he went pretty easy on them. But aside from that, we never had possession of anything that wasn't specifically issued to us by the Air Force -- with the exception of toiletries which we had to buy at one of the stores on base.

Went through in early 2012 and they give you the opportunity to use your cell phone for 15 minutes every Sunday. It may seem like a perk but I think it actually makes your time there harder. For the first week before our first phone call I didn’t even think about home then when I did that’s when I really started to miss it

Every branch is different when it comes to sleeping arrangements it usually depends on location and age of the barracks. New recruits have it much easier today cause they can’t knock you down anymore or rap you in the head like back in my day when they could physically touch you and push you around. The whole purpose of basic in all branches is to try and weed out the weak and try and break the strong. Its a mental game that has always seemed to work. If you go for special training Navy seals, airborne, rangers, green beret or others you will wish you were still in basics cause they dog you even harder if you go into any of those.

Few questions they had answered. Air Force gets three 15 min phone calls throughout all of basic training which is pretty standard across all branches. We got one 2 hour base liberty during our fourth week which is what he was referring to when he said he would see trainees at Popeyes or subway. The clipboards are not a checklist but instead used to tuck the sheets and blankets in tighter and to make hospital corners. As far as bunk beds go there are older barracks where the dormitory is bunk beds but the new dormitories( the ones shown in the video) are all single beds. Hope this helps

Also, idk if it changed since I’ve been there, but the only time we ever went to subway or papa Johns was on week 8 after we got back from beast. The beast champion flights were aloud one hour in the BX food court.

Upon getting to BMT, you get issued a 72 hour backpack with all your essentials and a eccw jacket. You don’t get to keep your phone nor use it on the weekends btw

Lackland AFB is in San Antonio, TX. The goretex parka and hat are handed out upon arrival in winter. No, you do not pay for your initial uniform issue, in any branch. You do pay for your basic issues after 6 months - 1 year though. That depends on the branch. Cell phones have NEVER been allowed in Air Force BMT. Ever! They are locked up with the rest of your luggage. The MTIs are there to instruct you, not just yell at you. Most other videos make it all about the telling, but the truth is that unless you constantly screw up, it’s mostly talking. However, they will go full ape shit on you in 0.2 seconds once you do ANYTHING wrong. Subway, main exchange, and all shops are off limits to trainees until they get a base pass the last week of training.
